The UK has officially completed its transition to a fully digital immigration system, replacing physical visa stickers and BRPs with electronic visas. South Africans travelling to the United Kingdom will now experience a major change in how visas are issued and managed. As of today, the UK has officially completed its transition to a fully digital immigration system, replacing physical visa stickers and Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) with electronic visas, known as eVisas.

This marks a significant shift in how South African visitors, students and workers access and prove their UK immigration status. For South Africans applying for a UK visa, whether for tourism, study or employment, the biggest change is that there will no longer be a physical visa vignette placed inside your passport. Instead, your visa will exist as a secure digital record linked directly to your South African passport.

Once your application is approved, you will receive an email confirming your visa decision and instructions on how to create and access your UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. This account will store your digital immigration status. When travelling, UK border officials will verify your permission electronically by scanning your passport.
