On 21 February, Zimbabwe pauses to honor the life and legacy of the late Cde Robert Gabriel Mugabe, born in 1924 in Kutama village, Zvimba District. From his rural upbringing at a Jesuit mission station, Mugabe rose to become a towering figure in African politics, leading the liberation struggle against colonial rule and shaping the destiny of an independent Zimbabwe. 21 February marks not only his birthday but also a moment of reflection on his revolutionary journey.

Mugabe’s leadership brought the end of white minority rule in Rhodesia, ushering in independence in 1980. His 37 years in power, however, remain deeply contested.
