From his rural upbringing at a Jesuit mission station, Mugabe rose to become a towering figure in African politics, leading the liberation struggle against colonial rule and shaping the destiny of an independent Zimbabwe. 21 February marks not only his birthday but also a moment of reflection on his revolutionary journey.
Mugabe’s leadership brought the end of white minority rule in Rhodesia, ushering in independence in 1980. As prime minister and later president, he invested heavily in education, giving Zimbabwe one of Africa’s highest literacy rates, and positioned himself as a steadfast voice against Western influence and neo-colonialism. His 37 years in power, however, remain deeply contested.
While celebrated across Africa and the Global South as a symbol of resistance and sovereignty, his later rule was marred by economic decline and political repression.
