Bolt drivers are calling for greater safety measures, including access to passenger profiles before accepting trips, following the brutal killing of 22-year-old Isaac David Satlat in Pretoria West. Satlat was hijacked and strangled inside his own vehicle on February 11 after responding to what police believe was a fake ride request. His body and car were later found abandoned in Atteridgeville.
The killing has intensified calls for stronger safety measures across the e-hailing industry. Road safety organisation Arrive Alive has previously said that both drivers and passengers share responsibility for reducing risk when using e-hailing services. The organisation advised riders to verify the driver’s name, photograph and vehicle registration details on the app before entering a vehicle and to use in-app trip-sharing features to alert trusted contacts of their journey.
Arrive Alive also encourages passengers to remain alert throughout trips and avoid distractions that may compromise their awareness. Dashcam footage from inside Satlat’s vehicle, which captured the attack and his last moments, assisted authorities in identifying and arresting suspects. The video shows passengers who appeared to be ordinary riders before turning on the driver during the trip.
