In a statement on Thursday, the watchdog said it has referred the companies to the Competition Tribunal for allegedly agreeing to raise the price of glass sold to consumers and insurance companies. The alleged price-fixing dates back to 2004.
“On 17 February 2026, the Competition Commission (Commission) referred a complaint against two companies operating in the automotive glass sector to the Competition Tribunal (Tribunal) for prosecution. The two companies are PG Glass (Pty) Ltd (“PG Glass”) and Glasfit (Pty) Ltd (“Glasfit”) (collectively, the “Respondents”). “The respondents are suppliers of laminated and toughened automotive glass in South Africa and compete in the market for the distribution and fitment of automotive glass.
They are alleged to have entered into an agreement and or engaged in a concerted practice to fix prices of automotive glass products they supplied to end-user customers and insurance companies in South Africa.” The commission added that “this conduct constitutes price fixing which contravenes section 4(1)(b)(i) of the Competition Act 89 of 1998 (as amended) (the “Act”). The conduct is alleged to have started in 2004 and remains ongoing”. The commission’s investigation found the companies had a long-standing agreement to increase prices by the same percentage each year.

If found guilty, the firms could face fines of up to 10% of their annual turnover. “Automotive glass forms part of industrial intermediary products, a priority sector for the Commission. Dismantling of the alleged cartel will contribute towards fairer pricing of automotive glass for the benefit of consumers as well as insurance companies,” added Commissioner Doris Tshepe.
