Residents in Howick are being urged to remain vigilant following a series of incidents in which elderly shoppers have been targeted by thieves operating in and around local supermarkets. The recent cases have raised concerns among community members, with some fearing that a syndicate may be preying on vulnerable residents, particularly during pension payout periods and month-end. Earlier this week, an elderly woman had her wallet stolen from her handbag while shopping inside a supermarket.
According to the Howick Community Policing Forum (CPF), she had placed her handbag on her trolley when she was distracted by two individuals. While her attention was diverted, another person allegedly removed her wallet. CPF chairperson Therusha Govindsamy said the incident was not isolated and urged shoppers to be more cautious.
We’ve noticed that these incidents have been happening more frequently, and in some cases people are careless with their belongings. “The distraction happens very quickly and by the time you realise, your money or valuables are gone. “It is important to always keep your bag close to you and remain extra cautious,” she said.
