Karonga Police Station officer-in-charge Morgan Dzonzi has warned people in the district against harbouring suspects and aiding illegal immigrants. He expressed the sentiments on Saturday during a crime prevention meeting at Mwahimba Village in Traditional Authority Kyungu in the district. “Aiding entry of and harbouring illegal immigrants and other criminals can compromise security in the district,” said Dzonzi.
He also bemoaned smuggling of goods to neighbouring countries, saying the malpractice compromises government’s revenue collection drive and circulation of foreign exchange. Dzonzi asked community members to unite and protect girls from early marriages. “Let me also remind community members to embrace the principle of knowing your neighbours, a community-based crime prevention approach and the culture of reporting any suspicious activities to police,” he said.
Acting group village head Mwahimba Mwakifwamba commended the police for the awareness campaign, saying the event enlightened his subjects on security issues. “We will relay the message to other communities because we want to fight crime in our area,” he said. The chief pledged to formulate by-laws to fine parents and guardians who marry off their children.

One of the participants, Grace Mbobe, described the awareness as fruitful, saying it touched important security areas. “The police have reminded us that parents and traditional leaders have roles to protect girls from early marriages and report illegal immigrants,” she said. Mbobe said working with police to combat crime will bear fruits unlike when people take the law into their own hands.
