Man who terrorised Richards Bay region gets five life terms

The high court in Mtunzini sentenced a man to five life terms plus 155 years behind bars for a variety of crimes on Friday. Zululand Observerreportsthat Muzikhona Khehla Khumbulani Mthethwa (36) was found guilty of seven counts of rape, two counts of attempted murder, three counts of robbery, house break-in and assault. According to the police report, Mthethwa terrorised communities in Richards Bay, KwaMbonambi and Empangeni between 2017 and his arrest in 2021.

In March of 2017, he raped and strangled a woman in KwaMbonambi, KZN, with the intention of killing her. During his cold-blooded raping spree, Mthethwa also came across three women in Richards Bay. He fired a shot at one woman and raped the other while forcing the other victims to witness the act.

“His reign of terror ended when he was arrested and charged on 21 counts, inclusive of rape, attempted murder, business robbery, house break-in and assault,” said the police report.Police report that his youngest rape victim was a 13-year-old girl who he raped after breaking into the house she was sleeping in.
