FORMER Highlanders and Zimbabwe right back Bekithemba Ndlovu says taking Highlanders and Scottland to Maphisa for the Independence Cup final is a long overdue recognition for Matobo District. Government confirmed on Tuesday that the two teams will headline this year’s Independence celebrations, with the final set for Maphisa. Matobo District has one Division One side, Matobo United in the Central Region.

In previous years Kezi Strikers and Matopo Rangers featured in Division Two and Three under Zifa structures, but topflight football has rarely reached the area. Ndlovu, who won several honours with Highlanders and hails from KoNdiweni Line near Kezi Business Centre, described the move as very important for the district. “At least the nation is seeing that Independence celebrations are no longer just about Bulawayo and Harare.

They are now moving around the country. The stadium being built here will remain for our people and that helps football in the long term,” he said. Ndlovu and his brothers Dumisani Fazo and Mbongeni all played for Highlanders and helped put the district on the football map.

They are part of a strong list of football figures from the area. Ndlovu believes the match will draw huge support.“It feels like a homecoming. Highlanders have strong backing in Kezi and Maphisa.

I expect a big crowd and I will be there with my friends to celebrate and watch the final,” he said. Ndlovu said many young players in the district will have an opportunity to watch a Premiership match.“For some of the youngsters this will be the first time toy watch topflight teams live. That alone can push them to take the game seriously.” Prosper Njini Ndlovu from St Joseph’s Mission, about 40 kilometres from Maphisa, said the match will bring pride to the community.

He hopes it also sends a message to young people battling drug and substance abuse. “This is positive for our youths. Sport gives them something better to focus on.

Many here love Highlanders but some have never seen them play live. Maphisa will be full,” he said. Tennyson Sibanda, a former police officer, welcomed the development.“It is good to see Highlanders coming here.

People in this area support the club,” he said. Vuyisile Moyo from Chief Bidi’s area said the occasion carries weight beyond the result.“Bosso are former champions and Scottland won the title last season. Bringing them here is special.

The facility that is being built will remain for athletics and football. That is what matters,” he said.
