A motorist arrested for drunk driving in Umhlanga Rocks has been convicted in the Durban Magistrate’s Court, as blood test results continue to strengthen prosecutions against offenders arrested during road safety operations. Since the launch of operation #NenzaniLaEzweni in August 2025, more than 4 400 motorists were arrested for drunk driving across the province. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, said the conviction highlights the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between law enforcement agencies.

Duma commended the collaboration between the Road Traffic Inspectorate, SAPS, Durban Metro Police, the Department of Health and the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development in processing cases and securing convictions. “We wish to thank the Road Traffic Inspectorate for their high level of efficiency and professionalism in ensuring a successful conviction of motorists arrested for drunk driving,” said Duma. He said blood test results from several motorists arrested during operations in Umhlanga Rocks have now been processed, with many returning positive results, strengthening the state’s case in court.

Duma said the province would continue intensifying road safety enforcement. “Road networks should not be playgrounds for irresponsible drivers. We must remove all these elements that are costing our country a fortune.
