Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) board of directors on Monday summoned suspended director-general George Kasakula and slapped him with a charge of politicising the public broadcaster. But Mwamadi said he was not aware of the actual proceedings. “What I can confirm is that the meeting took place indeed,” he said in an interview yesterday.
But our sources, who opted for anonymity, said the board was scheduled to have further meetings with Kasakula before making its decision. The source said the Monday meeting was held in Blantyre where Kasakula had to respond to questions from the board members. Kasakula last evening said he could not divulge details because the matter was private.
“They are private matters and there is nothing I can say,” he said. In an interview yesterday, Media Council of Malawi chairperson Jolly Ntaba said MBC is a public broadcaster funded by the public, as such, it should be free from political interference. “We need to free MBC, we have always advocated for free media,” he said in an interview.

The Office of the President and Cabinet suspended Kasakula at the time parastatal boards were dissolved following the victory of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the September 16 2025 General Elections, defeating the Malawi Congress Party. Kasakula, who was appointed to the position in 2021, was suspended alongside the now fired Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority director general Daud Suleman, National Economic Empowerment Fund chief executive officer Humphrey Mdyetseni and Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority chief executive officer Henry Kachaje pending investigation. Before his suspension, Kasakula was on October 10 assaulted by suspected DPP cadets at MBC TV Kwacha Studios in Blantyre where they forced him out of his office and dragged him to a live studio to apologise to President Peter Mutharika and First Lady Gertude Mutharika for negative comments during the campaign. Section 117 (3) of Communications Act (2016) provides that the director general shall be removed from office on several grounds including incompetence, misconduct and involvement in active politics.
