A 17-year-old matric pupil narrowly escaped death when a car drove off Dabulamanzi Road in Ashdown and slammed into the wall of his home, stopping just metres from his bed late last Friday night. Luvuyo Madondo, a Grade 12 pupil at Nyonithwele Secondary School in Pietermaritzburg, said he was lying in bed scrolling on his phone around 11pm when he heard the sound of crashing vehicles, followed moments later by a deafening bang. The next minute the car was next to my bed.
That’s when I realised, I almost lost my life. The vehicle smashed into the corner of his bedroom, sending bricks flying. “My body is still sore.
I lost my mind for a second. I didn’t go to school today because I’m not feeling well,” he said. Thembiso Zondo, a relative, said the driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle after crashing into a parked vehicle.

“He hit a car parked on the side of the road, the guard rails, a water meter, and then crashed into this house,” said Zondo. She said she was woken by screams at her home and rushed to her relative’s home only to find that the car had crashed into their home. Despite promises from the driver to return and repair the damage, residents said reckless driving along the stretch of road had become routine. Neighbour Nomusa Magubane said the community was living in constant fear and urgently needed improved road safety measures.
