One person has died, and a dog has been left in critical condition after a single vehicle crash on the N3 between Balgowan and Lions River in KZN on Monday morning. Roland Robertson, spokesperson for Midlands EMS, said that two people were trapped inside the vehicle, and a dog had been ejected during the crash. “One person sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on scene, while the second person was in a critical condition requiring urgent advanced medical care.
“The Jaws of Life, along with other specialised rescue equipment, were deployed to safely extricate the critically injured patient from the vehicle,” he said. Robertson added that once freed, the person was stabilised on scene and transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment. Midlands EMS medics and K9 handlers immediately attended to the dog, which had suffered injuries after being thrown from the vehicle.
The animal was in distress and required urgent medical care. Crews stabilised the dog and monitored its condition throughout transport, ensuring it remained as stable as possible. “The dog was then rushed to a nearby veterinary hospital for specialised treatment and continued care.” Robertson added that authorities were in attendance, assisting with the scene.
