Local filmThe Gunless Soldier’s producer Joyce Mhango-Chavula has commended organisers of Year of Return Africa Awards (Yora) in Kenya for recognising the movie and ensuring that the accolade reaches home. She said this in the wake of the film’s recognition at the Yora continental awards, a platform that celebrates African creativity and storytelling, marking yet another milestone for the local film industry. The Gunless Soldierwas recognised in the category of Special Jury Award in November last year.

Chavula said the team is delighted to finally receive the accolade. She said: “We are elated to finally behold the trophy and grateful to Yora for doing everything possible to send the award. “The recognition itself is a testament of progress for the local film industry.

It means our films can stand and compete on the global stage.” The Gunless Soldierhas continued to gain international recognition since its premiere earlier last year, with screenings beyond Malawi. The film tells the story of a young girl driven by loss and a quest for justice, while highlighting the consequences of mob justice. Through its narrative, the film explores other societal issues, including corruption and abuse of power.

On new projects that fans can look forward to, Chavula confirmed: “I can’t talk much on it, but yes, we are working on something in the background and at the right time we will be able to share.” The Film Association of Malawi (Fama) in a statement hailed the achievement, saying it is a source of pride and encouragement for local filmmakers striving to break into global markets. “We are so proud of the achievements that local films are making internationally,” reads the statement. The film is expected to be screened at the Hannover Film Festival in Germany next month after it was also screened in France soon at the Cannes and Africa USA International film Festival. Locally, the film and individual actors have scooped accolades at Maso, UMP and Malawi Film awards for their roles.
