KwaZulu-Natal authorities have issued an urgent public safety warning as a severeheatwavecontinues to grip large parts of the province. The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) said it is working closely with the South African Weather Service (SAWS), which has forecast persistently above-average temperatures, particularly in northern KwaZulu-Natal, until at least Friday. Areas identified as most at risk include AbaQulusi, Alfred Duma, Big 5 Hlabisa, Dannhauser, Jozini, Msinga, Nongoma, Nquthu, Newcastle, uMhlathuze and uPhongolo.
Residents in affected areas have been urged to take precautions to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses. These include avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, drinking plenty of water and ensuring that vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children and people living with chronic illnesses are checked on regularly.
