Zimbabwe Warriors captain Marvelous Nakamba has completed a transfer to English Championship side Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with Luton Town. Luton Town Chief Executive Gary Sweet acknowledged Nakamba’s “special character” and “real quality” during his time at the club. Reports suggest Nakamba’s deal with Sheffield Wednesday is for six months potentially preceding a move to the Middle East.
Nakamba’s move comes amidst significant controversy following Zimbabwe’s recent 3-2 defeat to South Africa in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). During the match Nakamba conceded a late decisive penalty due to a handball in the 18-yard area an incident widely criticized as “inexplicable.” Nakamba has since issued a public apology stating:“I just have to man up and accept the mistake that I did. And I’m sorry to the country, to my teammates, to everyone in Zimbabwe.” Furthermore, a petition has reportedly been launched urging FIFA and CAF to investigate the match’s integrity, citing suspicious behavior and betting patterns.
