Heavy rains and an unexpected hailstorm swept through the Randfontein area on Tuesday afternoon, causing widespread flooding and disruption to businesses and schools. The storm, which began around 16:00 and continued into the evening, brought intense downpours and large hailstones that damaged property and flooded roads.Randfontein Heraldreportsthat Tambotie Mall was among the hardest hit. Sections of the roof reportedly leaked as rainwater poured into passages, and several stores were forced to close.Centre manager Lynnette Nordin states that strong winds contributed to panels shifting parts of the roof, which allowed the rain to enter from above. “Mall management has since begun clean-up operations and assessments of structural damage.
The cost of repairs will be known once assessments are done,” says Nordin.Lynette further notes that emergency authorities were not present at the mall. Nearby schools also experienced significant damage. Laerskool Randfontein and Ramkriekies classrooms were also affected.
The rugby field and playground were left waterlogged and covered in hail. Fortunately, most of the children had gone home when the rain started, and those who were at school were not harmed. Additionally, no serious injuries were reported at the time of publication, although authorities urged the public to remain cautious when travelling through affected areas. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and community cooperation during extreme weather events, as residents hope for improved preventative measures to reduce the impact of future storms.
