Gauteng Provincial SAPS commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni is on the scene in Van Dyk Park, Boksburg, following what is believed to have been an attempted hit on a resident linked to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. Boksburg Advertiserreportedfrom the scene that the Klapper Street resident narrowly escaped the apparent hit after coming under fire outside his home. A reliable source toldBoksburg Advertiseron the scene that the victim was named by a previous witness at the Madlanga Commission, relating to an ongoing IPID investigation.

Residents toldBoksburg Advertiserthat the shooting happened at about 09:40. Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says the victim was about to drive into his property when occupants of a Toyota Vitz opened fire on him. His car has 16 bullet holes, and he hid under the car to escape the gunfire, Nevhuhulwi says.

“They fired shots at him before driving away. The victim escaped unharmed. The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage.” No further information was available at the time of publishing.

In December,Marius van der Merwe, a Brenthurst, Brakpan, resident was gunned down in front of family. He was a Madlanga Commission witness and had previously survived other attempts on his life. Brakpan Heraldreported at the time that his mother-in-law, Lesley McLean, said Van der Merwe mentioned a few times that he was scared for his life. “His words were: ‘I have done what I have to do, but I know I’m going to get killed for it’,” said Lesley.
