KwaZulu-Natal residents have been urged to prioritise safety and exercise extreme caution as a severe heatwave continues to grip large parts of the province. According to the South African Weather Service (Saws), temperatures are expected to remain well above average, with the northern regions of KZN forecast to experience extreme heat conditions at least through Friday. Municipalities expected to be badly affected include AbaQulusi Alfred Duma, Big 5 Hlabisa, Dannhauser, eDumbe, eMadlangeni, eNdumeni, Jozini, Mandeni, Msinga, Mthonjaneni, Mtubatuba, Newcastle, Nkandla, Nongoma, Nquthu, uMhlabuyalingana, uMhlathuze, uMlalazi and uPhongolo.

KZN MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Thulasizwe Buthelezi warned that the prolonged heat could lead to serious health risks if residents fail to take precautions. โ€œThe temperatures we are currently seeing across the province are dangerous. We are urging everyone to be smart and stay vigilant.

If you donโ€™t have to be under the direct sun, please stay in the shade,โ€ Buthelezi said. Drink water constantly, even if you donโ€™t feel thirsty, and look out for those who cannot look out for themselves. The department has urged communities to pay special attention to vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children and people with underlying health conditions, who face the highest risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Schools in affected areas have been advised to suspend outdoor sports and strenuous physical activities until conditions improve. Those required to work outdoors are encouraged to take regular breaks in shaded areas, wear loose-fitting protective clothing and remain well-hydrated. Residents have also been cautioned to avoid sugary and caffeinated drinks, which can contribute to dehydration during extreme heat.
