Online ReporterFormer Zimbabwe Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari has distanced himself from a WhatsApp-based scam using his name to promote a supposed investment in a cruise ship business.Mwaruwari, who enjoyed a successful playing career in Europe with clubs including Portsmouth and Manchester City, says he is “deeply disturbed” that his identity is being exploited to lure unsuspecting individuals into fraudulent schemes.Screenshots circulating in several WhatsApp groups claim Mwaruwari is part of a luxury cruise ship business and is inviting people to invest in the venture The posts use manipulated photos and fabricated endorsements from the ex-striker to give the scheme an air of legitimacy.But in a statement to the BBC, Mwaruwari flatly denied any involvement.“I want to make it clear that I am not involved in any cruise ship business, investment scheme or WhatsApp group promoting such things,” Mwaruwari said.“These people are using my name and image without my permission to commit fraud I urge the public not to be misled.”The former Warriors skipper, who now works in football development and coaching, has urged Zimbabweans and the broader public to report any suspicious messages or groups falsely linking him to financial opportunities.“I’ve worked hard to build my name and reputation, and it is painful to see criminals using it to deceive people I encourage anyone who receives such messages to report them and warn others,” he added.Zimbabwe’s police and cybersecurity authorities have been alerted, and Mwaruwari’s representatives are reportedly considering legal action.This is not the first time high-profile Zimbabwean personalities have been impersonated online
