Leonard Gaoretelelwe Lekgetho was on Monday appointed as the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) new Acting Head. Lekgetho takes the helm of the independent public integrity and anti-corruption authority following a career spanning over two decades within the institution.

The appointment comes after the departure of the former SIU Head, Advocate Andy Mothibi, who has been appointed as the new National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP). Lekgetho is described by the SIU as a leader with a “relentless pursuit of justice, integrity, and accountability”. His career in law enforcement began as a Special Investigator with the Directorate of Special Operations, also known as the Scorpions, where he specialised in investigating organised crime, fraud, and cybercrime.

After the dissolution of the Scorpions, Lekgetho brought his expertise to the SIU. The Unit describes his transition as an evolution “from Scorpion to Cobra,” referring to the SIU’s emblem. He has served in several critical leadership roles within the organisation, including Chief Forensic Investigator, Projects Director, Chief National Investigations Officer, and most recently as Chief Operations Officer.

In terms of achievement, Lekgetho brings a wealth of academic and tactical qualifications to the role. He holds an LLB and a B.Sc. Honours in Geographic Information Systems as well as specialised diplomas in Cyber Law and Criminal Justice.

His leadership credentials are further bolstered by international training at the FBI Academy in Washington D.C. and the Commonwealth Africa Anti-Corruption Centre. In his acceptance statement, Lekgetho paid tribute to his predecessor, Advocate Andy Mothibi, noting the ten years they worked closely together.
