A 37-year-old Ballito spear fisherman fortunately avoided serious injury when he was hit by the propeller of a fishing boat at Christmas Bay on Saturday morning, reportsThe North Coast Courier. According to Ballito’s National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Station 41 commander, Mike Bishop, the man had floated a marker buoy to indicate he was in the water just after 6am, but the skipper of the fishing boat did not see it in the glare of the morning sun. “The skipper and crew of the charter fishing boat recovered the man from the water, providing medical care and raising the alarm before bringing the man ashore at Salmon Bay, where they were met by NSRI Ballito crew and IPSS paramedics,” said Bishop.
“The skipper and crew of the fishing boat are commended for their swift actions,” he added. Bishop said the spear fisherman was stable and in good spirits when transported to hospital for further care.
