The United States (US) Government has pledged to continue supporting the Malawi’s young entrepreneurs through skills development, exposure and the strengthening of professional networks. US Embassy chargé d’affaires Jonathan Fischer said this in Lilongwe on Thursday during an entrepreneurship training on sustainable business models for the modern youth organised under the Mandela Washington Fellowship. He said programmes such as the Mandela Washington Fellowship are equipping young leaders with knowledge and resources to grow successful enterprises through academic exchange and practical learning at US universities.
An alumnus, Spark Delight Limited chief executive officer Victor Daffrece, said the fellowship provides participants with critical business management and technology skills. He said the programme offers mentorship and exposure to advanced business platforms and systems, which underscore the importance of collaboration in entrepreneurship, particularly within the local context. The training attracted 20 young entrepreneurs and is being held under the theme ‘Beyond the passion: Sustainable business models for the modern youth’. Since its inception in 2014, the Mandela Washington Fellowship has brought 7 200 young leaders from across sub-Saharan Africa to the United States, including 156 Malawians who have returned home with enhanced skills and experience.
