Hemp is fast gaining traction as a green economic alternative in KwaZulu-Natal, with industry advocates urging government and big business to remove legislative barriers and invest in a sector they say could create jobs, cut emissions and revitalise rural communities. Hemp is a versatile plant that is part of the cannabis sativa family (the plant that produces marijuana); its image is often held in low esteem because of this association; however, hemp can be cultivated for a myriad of industrial uses.
KwaZulu Hemp Association (KHA) chairperson Sheldon Cramer said hemp can be used to make furniture, clothing, and animal feed. The myriad uses of the plant have prompted the association to involve rural and small-scale farmers in its efforts to increase cultivation across the province.
