President Cyril Ramaphosa’s view that all under-performing mayors should be removed before the local governmental elections sounds a lot like empty words for campaigning. Is it not the president’s duty to co-ordinate the functions of departments by appointing ministers to effectively oversee such? The least Ramaphosa should do is tell the Department of Co-operative Governance minister to remove all inefficient or corrupt ANC mayors, or he will just fire the minister and launch an inquiry into why such municipalities under-performed for so long with the same officials in charge, at the cost of many party votes.
I realise that the municipalities’ dirty laundry being made public would hurt the party’s election results but these would pale in comparison to continued non-service delivery and corruption losses. Ramaphosa could get rid of all the bad ANC mayors if he really wanted to, instead of just saying it should happen, as it is part of his job!
