Surely we face several crises, chief among which is the fiscal crisis gripping the nation. Doubts remain about our ability to meet some of our obligations going forward, owing to a prolonged slump in the diamond market. Naturally, therefore, something needs to change to turn the situation around early in the year.
We have been used to doing things in a certain way since our independence. But it is common knowledge that a lot has changed over time. The makeup of the country has changed significantly in the last sixty years.
The pressure on the national purse has grown tremendously, as the population now demands a wide array of social services, including road maintenance, good schools and social welfare benefits. In some cases, the population has grown accustomed to support in the form of free seeds, fertilisers and ploughing services, which has become the norm, even if it is unsustainable.
