The ridiculous Firearms Control Amendment Bill of 2025, which targets licensed firearm owners and lawful security practitioners, is being challenged by pro-gun lobby group Safe Citizens through a submission titled “Safe Citizen. An evidence-driven re-framing of violent crime.” (The Witness, January 22.) And rightly so. But as always, the writing is on the wall, and I quote: “The Civilian Secretariat for Police Service has acknowledged receipt of the report, while the Presidency, Police minister and Parliament’s police committee remain silent.” The three main role players in fighting crime are silent!
Exactly the reason why 5727 people were murdered between January and March last year, an average of 64 daily. Exactly the reason why 8452 civilian guns were stolen or lost, as recorded in the SAPS 2023-2024 annual report. And why crime is way beyond control.
Because our leaders are silent when they should speak out, and speak out when they should shutup. Be that as it may, we are still a blessed country as we can sleep peacefully at night, not subjected to the sounds of war. For that, I thank our “silent leadership”.
