The war of words between members of the DA is escalating out of control, with mudslinging assuming centre stage. South Africans are witnessing an ugly battle for political survival. A brutal political contest for supremacy is taking it’s toll on our leaders.
The attack on those in high profile positions is a particularly repugnant tactic that has been deployed extensively throughout our history. Fabricating lies is not a just a disease of our era but has ravaged the entire South African body politic. Our politics should not be turned into contests over who can insult the most, lie the most, scandalise the most, malign the most.
If the spirit of the primacy of common good were to animate all our politicians, we would not be witnessing character assassinations which leave the public dismayed and disheartened. Let political sanity prevail. A legal conflict would decimate every vestige of democracy in our troubled and divided land.
