DA supporters are right to reject Dion George’s claim that the party has been “captured” by the ANC. In South Africa’s current political climate, dramatic accusations are common, but they should not be accepted without proof. George’s claim does not stand up to scrutiny.

It comes across less as a serious warning and more as the reaction of a disgruntled former minister who lost his position. He made these allegations only after he was removed as minister of environmental affairs and sanitation. The timing is significant and weakens his credibility.

It suggests his statement is driven by personal bitterness rather than genuine concern about the DA’s direction. In politics, timing matters. His story therefore appears to be a convenient explanation for his political downfall rather than a factual account of what is happening inside the DA. However, dismissing George does not mean ignoring the wider issues facing the party. Over recent years, the DA has entered into complicated coalition governments.

These arrangements have forced the party to work closely with former political opponents, including the ANC. This has created tension within the party and among its supporters. Some worry that the DA’s identity has become less clear and that its liberal principles are being diluted.

Critics argue that co-operation with the ANC in government risks confusing voters about what the DA stands for, even if this co-operation is mainly about keeping governments functioning. It is this real ideological tension that gives George’s claim some attention, even though his allegations themselves lack credibility. For DA leaders, the way forward is clear.

They must consistently show through their actions and policies that the party remains independent and true to its values, rather than reacting emotionally to attacks. At the same time, they need to consider whether coalition politics has created perceptions of being too close to the ANC, even if this was never their intention.
