Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate George Zulu has taken Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) and Lilongwe City Mtandire-Mtsiliza legislator Alfred Gangata to court over the outcome of parliamentary election in the constituency. Zulu had earlier dragged MEC and Gangata of the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to the High Court of Malawi, seeking nullification of the constituency’s parliamentary race in the September 16 General Election and sought a declaration of a fresh election. In his fresh petition to the High Court, Zulu highlights discrepancies in the number of null and void votes, noting that while constituency results showed 445 void votes, the district tally recorded 345 and MEC later declared 386.
He argues that the unexplained differences may have tipped the election where Gangata won by just nine votes, notably 12 369 votes against Zulu’s 12 360. “The only logical explanation for the missing 59 votes is illegal tampering of envelopes en route to MEC. These irregularities directly affected the election outcome,” reads the petition.
Zulu also points to the mishandling of election materials from the constituency to district tally centre, saying MEC ignored unlawful procedures. “We are challenging MEC’s November 20 decision declaring Gangata winner despite glaring irregularities that substantially affected the results,” said Zulu’s lawyer Wanangwa Munkhondia. MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa confirmed the commission has been served and will file its arguments.

The High Court ordered the determination of the results after Gangata challenged MEC’s decision to nullify the election in the constituency. On November 20 2025, MEC, in compliance with a court order, declared Gangata as winner of the election. Other candidates in the race included Ruth Chingwalu who got 1 610 votes, Elsie Mituka who amassed 1 313 and Linda Phiri who had 97.
