IMF Spotlights Botswana’s Corruption as Threat to Growth

Botswana’s reputation as one of Africa’s least corrupt nations is under scrutiny with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) highlighting growing corruption as one of the key obstacles to private sector development and economic diversification.

In its newly published report, Addressing Growth Bottlenecks in Botswana, the IMF warns that the country’s historic strength in governance, long a cornerstone of its development success is showing signs of erosion. Once lauded for its robust institutions, transparency and rule of law, Botswana now faces rising perceptions of corruption that could threaten its growth trajectory.
