Following the verification and certification of these results, the ECZ declared Bright Nundwe duly elected as Member of Parliament for Chawama on 16 January 2026. The declaration was witnessed by polling agents and monitors representing various political parties and organisations. Nundwe’s victory marks a notable achievement for the FDD in a constituency where competition is often dominated by larger political parties.
Celebrations erupted among his supporters shortly after the announcement, signifying what some observers view as a shift in voter sentiment within Chawama. He is expected to take up his seat in the National Assembly. Meanwhile, President Hakainde Hichilema has congratulated the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) and its candidate, Bright Nundwe, on winning the Chawama Constituency parliamentary by-election.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Hichilema said Mr. Nundwe’s victory in the tightly contested race reflected the democratic choice of the people of Chawama. He emphasised that while elections ultimately produce one winner, their deeper purpose is to strengthen peace, unity, and harmony among citizens. The President also commended the UPND candidate, all participating contenders, and the electorate for conducting themselves peacefully throughout the by-election.
