Pedestrians walking along Reinecke Street in Carletonville are forced to risk their lives when they walk on top of the bridge over the green belt canal. The danger is caused by a year’s worth of overgrown grass and weeds on the side of the bridge as the municipality has failed to cut it. Although there used to be neat pedestrian paths on the sidewalks on both sides of the road, these are not visible due to the long grass.Pedestrians now have to walk on the tarred road surface in front of oncoming vehicles.
The problem is particularly worrying for many learners who have to use this road, as it is the only place in this part of town where they can cross the canal safely. The Herald again took the issue to the Merafong City Local Municipality on Monday. “The bridge in Reinecke is part of the grass cutting programme and will be attended to as soon as possible,” their marketing and communication manager, Temba Fezani, responded.
