Actress Fikile Mthwalo recently opened up about why she moved back to Johannesburg after spending ten years in the United States. The actress has launched a YouTube channel,2020Fiks, where she gives fans a glimpse into her personal life. In a video shared this week, she spoke about the challenges she faced while living in America.
“Why did I move back to Johannesburg after 10 years in New York? Well, I failed. I failed at pretty much everything I had set out to do,” she said.
The actress explained that after earning her degree, she could not work. She graduated with a master’s degree from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. “I got my degree, but as soon as I graduated, I couldn’t work — I didn’t have papers to work in the United States.

That was almost like an immediate fail. It was tough watching my American classmates go on to do TV shows and theatre and be great,” she said. Mthwalo added that her personal life also suffered, as her marriage ended a couple of years later.
“My marriage crashed and burned, fell out of the sky, hit rock bottom, exploded in my face — basically failed as well. That was tough.” Fikile was married to Black Panther actor Athandwa Kani from 2015. The pair separated in 2020 and reportedly finalised their divorce in 2023.
