Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) has halted all operations at its South Ore Body (SOB) Shaft in Kitwe following a fatal underground accident that claimed the lives of two contract workers. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Mopani public relations manager. Nebert Mulenga, said the incident occurred on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at approximately 17:45 hours on the 3,760 Feet Level – 1,000 Crosscut.
The deceased were identified as Justine Mutaba, 50, and Josiah Silomba, 42. “Mopani is working closely with the Mines Safety Department (MSD) and other relevant authorities to inform the next of kin of the deceased employees and investigate the cause of this tragic accident,” Mulenga said. He added that all operations at the SOB Shaft have been suspended until further notice as investigations continue.
Mopani expressed condolences to the families and colleagues of the two miners, stating that the company would provide the necessary support during the difficult period. “Further updates will be issued as appropriate,” Mulenga said.
