Our #MCM today is Captain Obet Mazinyi, a pioneering Zimbabwean aviator whose journey from humble beginnings to commanding the skies of global aviation is nothing short of extraordinary. Born in Harare and raised partly in Zambia during the 1960s, Mazinyi’s fascination with flight began early. Despite the racial and economic barriers of the time, he pursued his dream with relentless determination, enrolling in rigorous pilot training that would eventually launch him into the cockpit of some of the world’s most advanced aircraft.
Mazinyi’s career took a historic turn when he became the first Black African pilot to be hired by Cathay Pacific, one of Asia’s most prestigious airlines. At a time when diversity in global aviation was rare, his presence in the flight deck of a Hong Kong-based airline was groundbreaking. He quickly rose through the ranks, earning respect not just for his flying skills but for his discipline, humility, and leadership.
Over the course of more than 45 years in aviation, Captain Mazinyi has flown thousands of hours across continents, primarily on the Boeing 747-400ERF and the newer 747-8 freighters. His expertise earned him the role of senior instructor and Check Captain, where he was responsible for training and evaluating other pilots—an elite position that speaks volumes about his mastery of the skies. Currently based in Hong Kong, Mazinyi flies long-haul cargo routes for Cathay Cargo, including demanding missions between Asia and North America.
