The South Africa, Russia, China and Iran naval exercises set to start today in SA waters, were a surprise announcement. I recall that most of our naval frigates and submarines were awaiting prolonged servicing and repairs, and Russia had lost most of its Black Sea Fleet to Ukraine which does not even have naval vessels. And I thought Iran’s navy would be mostly camel-mounted forces (camels being ships of the desert), so just how effective can these naval exercises be?
I suppose the Venezuelan Navy has been blockaded or seized the U.S. Navy, making any credible international training partners tough to find, and Zimbabwe is still landlocked! Why do we have to help China’s navy train for its anticipated invasion of Taiwan, and Russian naval forces for its brutal war in Ukraine?
It all does no good to our international image. And we must all hope our ships and their crews are safe in their poorly maintained vessels.
