A KwaZulu-Natal family’s year ended in tragedy after four relatives were murdered during a violent home robbery in Mehlomyama, on the south coast, on Wednesday night. Police are now hunting for four suspects following the deadly attack, which claimed the lives of multiple generations of the same family. According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza, a witness reported that four unknown men kicked open the door of the rondavel, where she was sitting with her fiancé.

“Three of the [robbers] were armed with firearms, while the fourth was carrying a bush knife,” Magwaza said. The men allegedly demanded money. When told there was none, they opened fire, fatally shooting the woman’s fiancé.

In the aftermath of the killing, the suspects allegedly forced the traumatised woman to lead them to other family members. “When they reached the main house, the men shot and killed a mother and her two daughters, aged between 31 and 67,” said Magwaza. The attackers then fled the scene on foot, taking two cellphones with them. Police have opened four counts of murder and a hunt is underway for the four suspects.
