Police in Karonga have arrested a 26-year-old man, William Kishombe, for allegedly being found in possession of 10 sachets of cannabis sativa without a permit.

Confirming the development with Malawi24, Karonga Police Station public relations officer Constable Margret Msiska said Kishombe was arrested on December 30 at around 10:00 hours by detectives who were conducting general observations within Karonga Township.

“The suspect was immediately apprehended after failing to produce a permit or any supporting documents for the 10 sachets of cannabis sativa, which were wrapped in a black jumbo and found in his possession”, she said.

Msiska added that the seized substance will be taken to Lunyangwa Research Station for laboratory analysis.

Kishombe, who hails from Mwafilaso Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kyungu, Karonga District, is expected to appear in court soon to answer a charge of being found in possession of cannabis sativa without a permit, contrary to Regulation 4, Section 19(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
