Newly-crowned TNM Super League champions Mighty Wanderers have vowed to defend the title for the next eight seasons. The club’s director of football David Kanyenda made the bold declaration on Sunday upon the team’s arrival at its clubhouse in Blantyre following their official crowning at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday. Wanderers ended their eight-year league title drought with a game to spare and settled for a two-all draw against Kamuzu Barracks in their last game on Saturday.
“Other teams should forget snatching this trophy from us because we will defend it for the next eight seasons. It is finally home and we will safely lock it in our mantelpiece,” he said. Kanyenda also thanked the club’s president Thomson Mpinganjira for his sacrifice, which has led to the team’s success.
Blantyre City deputy mayor Gerald Lipikwe, who was the guest of honour, said he was delighted that a team from his fold won the league title. Wanderers’ home-coming was spiced up with a live performance from the Black Missionaries, Black Nina and Bwede at the club house. The Nomads won the 16-team league with 69 points, three ahead of runners-up FCB Nyasa Bullets and five above third-placed Silver Strikers, who were the previous champions. The Nomads registered 20 wins, nine draws and a loss.
