Flames forward Khuda Myaba is making headlines off the pitch as much as he has during his career, declaring himself in the same league as Malawi’s most celebrated strikers, including Chiukepo Msowoya and Gabadinho Mhango.

The statement was posted on social media after Malawi’s goalless draw against Lesotho in an international friendly match in South Africa on Saturday.

Having been absent from the Flames squad since 2023, Myaba used the platform to stake his claim at the top of Malawi’s striking hierarchy, asserting that lesser forwards should be considered “fish” compared to “sharks” like him, Msowoya, and Mhango.

In a Facebook post, Myaba wrote, “We already settled this issue six years ago don’t compare fish with sharks … maybe I should say he’s not better than me 100 times,” accompanied by a screenshot from his time in the TNM Super League.

The image shows him competing with Nigerian-born Malawian striker Babatunde Adepoju, highlighting the season when Myaba overtook Adepoju to finish as the league’s top scorer with 21 goals, compared to Adepoju’s 15.

The comments appeared to be a subtle jab at Adepoju, who recently earned his second cap for the Flames without scoring.

Myaba doubled down in a follow-up post Sunday morning: “Khuda Myaba: Compare me with top strikers like Gabadinho Mhango, Richard Mbulu, Chiukepo Msowoya; the rest are fish.”

Statistically, the comparisons reveal an interesting picture.

While Myaba has scored 5 goals in 29 international appearances, Mhango has netted 20 in 75 games, Msowoya 22 in 88, and Mbulu 5 in 47.

Most of Myaba’s goals came during COSAFA Cup tournaments, with just one in World Cup qualifiers.

Notably, it took Myaba two years after his national team debut in 2017 to score his first goal in 2019, a milestone he considers a turning point in his international career.

Despite these numbers, he remains unapologetic about his self-assessment.

Myaba’s outspoken nature on social media is well-known.

Previous Flames coaches, including Patrick Mabedi, have faced his criticism for squad omissions.

Although he praised current coach Kalisto Pasuwa upon his appointment, Myaba has yet to receive a call-up under him.
