HARARE – Two men accused of running a fraud syndicate involving fake currency in and around Harare have been arrested after months of accumulating cases.

Agrippa Chivhenge and Edious Rungano were taken into custody by armed CID detectives on Wednesday night while sleeping at their rented home in Marlborough.

Victims have since been flocking to Braeside Police Station to identify the suspects, who face dozens of fraud-related charges.

The duo’s alleged crime spree first drew public attention in October when they reportedly duped a farmer out of 250 chickens. The suspects allegedly paid for the chickens using a bundle of obsolete Zimbabwe dollar notes concealed beneath a single United States dollar note, purportedly representing a payment of US$1,500.

More than 100 victims β€” many of whom had been selling goods via social media platforms β€” have since come forward, detailing how the suspects allegedly swindled them out of mobile phones, laptops, chickens and various other electronic items.
