For thousands of students at the University of Malawi (Unima) in Zomba, finding a quiet place to study or hold group discussions has long been a daily struggle.

Overcrowded classrooms and limited seating often forced students to make do with cafeteria tables or the corners of lecture halls.

That challenge is beginning to ease, thanks to a generous donation from NICO Group.

Through NBS Bank and ERIS Properties, NICO Group has donated 80 six-seater desks and chairs worth K97 million to Unima.

The contribution goes beyond financial support; it is a direct investment in students’ learning environments and the quality of education they receive.

Taweni Gondwe Xaba, NICO Group’s Head of Marketing and Customer Experience, said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to education and national development.

“Unima plays a vital role in shaping the country’s future leaders. Supporting education is an investment in national progress,” she said.

For Registrar Martin Matululu, the donation addresses a long-standing challenge.

“We had a serious shortage of spaces where students could sit, relax, and hold discussions,” he explained.

“With more than 15,000 undergraduates, every corner was often full. The new desks provide students with the environment they need to learn effectively.”

Students themselves are already noticing the difference. Yatuta Mulungu, President of the Student Representative Council, said group discussions and study sessions have become more frequent and productive.

“Before, it was difficult to gather for discussions because we had nowhere comfortable to sit,” he said.

“Now, students can collaborate easily, and study can happen at any convenient time.”

The impact goes beyond convenience. Comfortable seating has fostered a sense of dignity and focus among students, encouraging greater engagement in learning.

“It’s not just about the desks themselves,” Mulungu added.
