The fatal shooting of DJ and media personality Warrick “DJ Warras” Stock comes amid a deadly period for South African celebrities and public figures, reigniting fears that artists, creatives and high-profile individuals are increasingly becoming targets of violent crime. Stock was shot dead in central Johannesburg on Tuesday after being approached by unknown assailants shortly after parking his vehicle. “It is alleged that the victim was approached by three unknown suspects who opened fire before fleeing the scene on foot,” Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said.
The motive for the shooting is currently unknown, and investigations are ongoing. Police have urged anyone with information to contact CrimeStop on 08600 10111. Born in Durban, DJ Warras built a multifaceted career spanning radio, television, digital platforms and live performance.
In recent years, however, he had also become involved in private security operations — a move that, according to reports, may have placed him in harm’s way. Stock was reportedly linked to security operations at a building in Johannesburg’s inner city that had previously been identified as hijacked. City of Johannesburg public safety MMC Mgcini Tshwaku confirmed that the municipality had engaged Stock to provide security at the site and that he had frequented the building since around March. On the day he was killed, Stock had returned to the property as another company was installing biometric security systems.
