Government members have become well known for their excesses in food and alcohol consumption, but the group from Correctional Services at an umhlanga restaurant 10 months ago has created a new level of disgrace. (The Witnesson Wednesday.) Committee members, already well paid for doing their jobs, “were told to eat and drink as much as we want as the department will be paying”. And they did, bringing into clear focus the expression routinely used for corrupt officials at the government feeding trough — they made pigs of themselves in a seven-hour feeding and boozing frenzy costing the taxpayer R31433, of which food made up 12,14% of the bill.

The rest went on drinks, almost exclusively alcohol. Even real pigs wouldn’t go that far. They were “allegedly given the impression that the department’s head would pay”.

Defending themselves, they said: “We thought that maybe it was just a token of appreciation for the work which the committee had been doing in assisting the department to address some of its challenges.” In doing so, they became an additional department challenge themselves, requiring Correctional Services for their disgusting behaviour and for bilking the restaurant. Did they drive themselves home after all that grog? It has taken 10 months for this sordid event to become public knowledge.
