Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla confirmed that officers were alerted to a shooting while on patrol in the CBD. “The department can confirm a shooting incident that happened this afternoon in the Johannesburg CBD,” Fihla said.
“JMPD officers were the first responders to the incident after they were stopped by members of the public who alerted them to the shooting.” Fihla said the metro police could not yet provide details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting or the victim involved. “Currently, as a JMPD, we don’t have any information regarding the incident or the victim. The matter will be criminally investigated by the South African Police Service, who will then provide more information regarding the incident,” he said.
Chad Thomas of IRS Forensic Investigations commented on the broader trend of violent crime affecting high-profile figures in the music industry. “It’s bizarre how many celebrity DJs have been shot and killed in South Africa over the past few years,” Thomas said. The SAPS is expected to take over the investigation and confirm further details once next-of-kin notifications and preliminary inquiries have been completed.
