The South African Weather Services (Saws) has issued an orange level 5 severe thunderstorm warning for KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday. The weather warning, promising significant impacts, comes as severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours were forecast by Saws. “Widespread showers and thundershowers are expected over most parts of KZN on Wednesday.
Models are indicating significant amounts of rain in excess of 50 millimetres for areas over the western parts, midlands and northern parts of KZN,” the agency said. Hail and excessive lightning are also expected, resulting in danger to life over the western and northern parts of the province. Saws has instructed residents to stay indoors where it is reasonable and off the roads.
“Avoid crossing swollen rivers and streams. And if trapped in floods, leave the vehicle and climb to higher ground. In buildings, at home, place valuables above the expected water level where they will be safe,” it said.
