As Malawi enters the busy festive season, the Malawi Police Service (MPS) has reaffirmed that strong partnerships with communities remain central to effective crime prevention, with Mzimba standing out as a positive example of shared responsibility for public safety.

Deputy Director for Community Policing and Police Units, Alexander Ngwala, made the remarks during a joint night patrol involving police officers and local residents in the district.

He commended the close cooperation between the Mzimba police and community members, describing the relationship as a key pillar in maintaining peace and security.

Ngwala said the level of collaboration and mutual understanding he observed during the patrol was encouraging, noting that such teamwork significantly enhances the safety of residents.

He assured the public that the police are fully prepared and committed to safeguarding lives and property throughout the festive season and into the New Year.

“Community partnership is not optional; it is essential,” Ngwala said, emphasizing that the police will continue to prioritize joint efforts with communities to prevent crime during the high-traffic holiday period.

However, Station Executive Committee Chairperson Emmanuel Ng’ambi highlighted several challenges affecting community policing initiatives, including shortages of basic equipment such as reflectors and whistles, which are vital for effective night patrols.

Ng’ambi also urged community members to remain vigilant and proactive about their own safety, stressing that crime prevention is a shared responsibility, with the police providing guidance and support.

During his visit, Ngwala toured several areas, including Chikusa Area, Chanthomba, and the Mzimba Local Education Authority (LEA), to appreciate ongoing community policing efforts and engage with residents involved in grassroots security initiatives.

The joint patrols and community engagements underscore the MPS’s commitment to people-centered policing, particularly during periods when communities face heightened security risks.
