One person was critically injured, and seven others sustained minor injuries following a single-vehicle rollover on the R34 near the Heni Garage in Gluckstadt, near Vryheid, on Monday morning. KwaZulu Private Ambulance spokesperson Craig Botha said paramedics were dispatched to the scene at about 6:30am after reports of a serious collision involving a single-cab bakkie. “On arrival, emergency crews found that the vehicle had lost control and overturned,” said Botha.
“One occupant sustained life-threatening injuries and required immediate advanced life support intervention.” Botha said the incident involved eight patients in total. While one patient was in a critical condition, the remaining seven occupants suffered minor injuries. Paramedics conducted triage at the scene before stabilising all patients.
They were subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment. The scene required the coordinated response of multiple emergency services. Members of the South African Police Service and the fire department were also in attendance to assist with scene management and to ensure public safety.

Police have since opened a preliminary investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the vehicle losing control. The collision caused traffic disruptions during the morning peak, with one lane of the R34 closed for approximately an hour while emergency crews carried out recovery and clean-up operations near the Heni Garage. Motorists have been urged to exercise caution on the route, particularly when travelling in vehicles carrying multiple passengers.
