LAND developer Warwickshire Pvt (Ltd) says over 500 families that illegally settled in the area earmarked for the LakeCity Housing Project being developed on the shores of Lake Chivero have agreed to regularize their status. Speaking to this publication,Tapiwa Nyandoro, a co-director with the landowner, Warwickshire said the regularisation programme was a result of months of engagement with the community.“Throughout the country wherever we have unplanned settlements we must work with community members who are willing to accept lifestyle improvements. As our leaders say, no one should be left behind when it comes to Vision 2030.
It is important to Warwickshire to make a contribution toward our national vision through this mandate that the government has given us,” “The integration of settlers into this development means that families that previously had no prospect is securing a title deed can now start the journey of building generational wealth through land ownership.” He added that under settler regularisation initiative dubbed the Legacy Beneficiary Programme, elderly settlers will be assisted to build homes. “For the elderly we have committed to build homes for them to live comfortably and enjoy the lifestyle and amenities of LakeCity without being marginalized. “LakeCity will offer better living standards through infrastructure like roads, sewer systems and running water as well as general services like healthcare centres and schools,” Nyandoro said.
In conclusion Nyandoro expressed his utmost confidence in Warwickshire’s regularisation programme and it’s offer of crucial lessons in terms of how to deal with settlers. “While circumstances may differ for other areas and different projects I think what we hope other players can take from our experience is this initial step of offering the local community a chance to be empowered through giving them a choice in the matter.“Many will accept it; some may decline but giving people the option to create wealth and security for their families needs to be a priority for any developer,” he said. The LakeCity Housing project is set to straddle over 829 hectares of land near Lake Chivero, just 28 kilometres outside Harare. On completion, it is expected to house at least 40 000 residents from different market segments.Employment opportunities are also expected to be created from hotels and leisure facilities that are also planned for the area.
