Preparations for next year’s Capital City Marathon are at an advanced stage and organisers are aiming for a larger field than this year. The road-running event is scheduled for February 22. As usual, the start will be at the City Hall and the finish will be at Msunduzi Athletics Stadium.
The main race will be a standard marathon — 42,2km — but those interested in running shorter distances will be accommodated in the 21,1km run, 10km run/walk and also the family five kilometre fun run and walk. According to KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA) president Steve Mkasi, they are aiming to attract about 6 000 athletes, with the majority of them expected to run the shorter distances, especially the 10km and five kilometre fun run and walk. “Remember that at the beginning of the year, you always hear people starting a new healthy lifestyle by taking up sport.
So we are likely to have a massive number of participants in the shorter races because they are seen as family or friends’ events,” said Mkasi. Our marketing is also a bit aggressive and we are very grateful to our partners, sponsors and all other stakeholders. “Our partners such as Hulamin [title sponsor], Msunduzi Municipality, The Witness [media partner], Coca-Cola, Mi7, Eden Garden Private Hospital and Sizundawo Engineering are playing a major role in the event and everything is made possible by them.

“We will stick to last year’s route because it gives us a chance to have the runners see KZN’s capital city, as you will observe that the race covers almost all parts of Pietermaritzburg.” Early bird entries will close on February 2, 2026. Late entries do not qualify to receive race T-shirts. Athletes can enter at any Pick n Pay store or www.webtickets.co.za or www.entryninja.com
